As there is less material in the rear triangle due to shorter tubes, the weight penalty is smaller than with the main triangle. It also is a section that isn't supposed to flex at all, another plus, and the cost savings is not insignificant. And you still get all the benefits of the advanced shaping of the front triangle and the benefits it confers. Same geometry, same ride, too.
